Chapter 19

Caleb

I arrived at work, sensing an uncharacteristic tense air in the environment, though everyone acted outwardly calm. I got to the elevator already wondering why Kyle wasn’t present to receive me. I noted to bring that up with him later.

I made my way to my office lost in thought about my next step with Peter. Something was afoot, and none of the board members were telling me anything. They didn't suspect I knew anything was going on yet, and I planned for them to assume my ignorance until I found out what their plan was.

What I was still sure about was that Emma would be fine away from here while I solved whatever plot this was. I got to my office to find Peter walking around my office searching for something. He was so absorbed in his search he didn’t hear me come in. Recalling Kyle’s words to me about Peter’s strange behavior coupled with what I saw at the party, I knew I could certainly not underestimate him. He might be the one behind this conspiracy.

I stepped hard on the floor so he’d hear. He leapt away from the shelf, spun around sharply, then glared at me. “What the…!” The words he was about to say died on his lips when he saw me. He tugged on his collar trying to present an outward image of perfect calm.

“What are you doing in my office, Peter?” I set down my suitcase on the desk gently then leveled my gaze at him, coolly.

He fidgeted, stammered then cleared his throat. “Inspecting. We’ve noticed…”

“We? Who’s we, Peter?” He stumbled back at the scorn in my voice.

“Umm… the board of directors noticed you’ve been staying away from work, or occupied with…” He trailed off, closed his mouth looking startled as if he had said too much.

I stepped forward to him looking into his scared eyes. “You haven’t answered my question. This is my office and whatever I do is my business. The board of directors can take up any complaints they have with me personally. Are you now their leashed dog, doing their sniffing and bidding?” I didn’t bother to conceal the contempt I had for him. I was tired of these games. I knew he had something to do with the conspiracy. If I pressed him hard on this, he might say something useful.

He dashed from my sight, walking to the door quickly. I watched him open the door then turned a venomous stare at me. “You’ll be hearing from me for this disrespect, Caleb.” He slammed the door, escaping.

I went to my seat, about to call Kyle in. His absence was unusual. He entered looking appalled and apologetic. “I’m sorry, Sir, for my absence. I found out I was locked in, at my office.”

Peter? I wondered. “That is troubling. I found Peter snooping around in my office. Seems he’s desperately searching for something.” I considered what that might be. Kyle looked confused as I opened my drawers looking for the file Emma had compiled on all our findings.
